The spring semester is reaching a fitting conclusion, and with that, all of EGD’s events that take place during the academic year.
Just last week, we had the final iteration of “Midweek Mashup,” EGD’s weekly social gatherings that take place every Wednesday during the fall and spring and consist of a toss-up of various gaming events.
Tell Me More About "Midweek Mashup"
The mashups themselves are open to the public and are split between the daytime and evening, with the earlier half being one main, themed event, while the later half includes three events happening simultaneously that fall under the categories of “game dev,” or educational, “esports,” and “casual gaming.”
As you can imagine, with this many activities happening every week, there’s a ton of variety each semester! Our attendees always found something to do that they liked and made friends over.
In fact, let’s take a glance at some of the awesome Midweek Mashup events that happened lately:
Critical Play: Wild West Edition
Starting with one of the recent daytime events that took place, we have “Critical Play: Wild West Edition”!
Of course, we like to dig deep when it comes to games and game design, so critical play events give folks a chance to analyze the gameplay and mechanics of different board games, which, in this case, were all Wild West-themed!

Players got to not only learn how to play games like Sheriff of Nottingham and BANG!, but also learn how themed games like these immerse you in a whole new world.
Watching a duel between cowboys is one thing, but imagining you’re in one yourself?? Better get ready to draw (a card).
Smash Tournament
Nothing brings all the gamers together like Super Smash Bros., right? Right.
That’s why we ran an SSBU tournament for an esports event not once, but twice this semester! And, of course, it was a “smash” hit both times. People lined up one after another to participate or watch, so there were many exciting matches to be had and friendships to be formed.

Game Playtesting
When you’re working on a game for a long time, it’s easy to gloss over potential bugs and other issues and assume that your project is a masterpiece, even after double and triple-checking.
That’s why having someone else playtest your game is so important, as you might notice or think of something that you didn’t before.

For that reason, we hosted a game playtesting session to serve as a game dev event, and students took this opportunity and ran with it. Class projects, side projects, and even our Studio Aspen’s game Project Dreamscape were all showcased and received valuable feedback from game students and non-game students alike.
Finding Your Voice with Batsu!
Everyone needs a chill, casual gaming experience every now and then...or chaotic.
In this event, some of our attendees went with the ladder as they found themselves at the mercy of the cards in Batsu! The Punishment Card Game! Hilarious challenges, acting sequences, and punishments took place, which in turn resulted in timeless photos and tears of laughter.

That’s a Wrap, Midweek Mashup!
Games bring people together, which is why we love bringing our community together each Wednesday for Midweek Mashup.
From students to individuals working in the games industry currently, we’ve had so many come and share memories with us, and we encourage more to join in the future to play or learn!
Midweek Mashup will resume in the fall semester, so we hope to see you all there!
