Excited to Announce AMA Talks with Kevin James Wong, and Atlas Chen

EGD Collective will present AMA talks with award-winning game designer and producer Kevin James Wong and with Design Team Manager at thatgamecompany Atlas Chen, both on Monday, July 20 at 7 pm EDT.


While in-person events have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, EGD Collective is continuing to run events remotely. The AMA talks are a part of EGD Collective’s Summer Series, which includes esports tournaments and discussions with industry professionals. Attendees of this particular talk will gain industry advice from the safety and comfort of their own homes.

 

Kevin James Wong is most recognized for winning the 2015 BAFTA Ones to Watch award for his involvement in the multiplayer game Chambara, “a term that refers to a genre of samurai movies that we studied during the game’s preproduction,” Wong said to GamesBeat. Chambara was also nominated for an Independent Games Festival award for Best Student Game and a Tokyo Game Show award, and was an official selection at IndieCade.


Wong has also worked as a freelance game designer for GameCake, Level Designer for OpenAI, and Junior Game Designer for Skydance. He also works for William Chyr Studio, where he has produced an Indiefund-backed puzzle and exploration game for Apple Arcade and Epic Games Store.

Atlas Chen began his career when he was 12, working at Hawks Studios to create 13 campaigns for Age of Empires, most notably Ocean Blue, a nominee of several AOK Heaven Game of The Year Awards in 2009.


Chen co-founded Echostone Games to continue developing his MFA thesis project Gemini: A Journey of Two Stars. The game amassed immense success as a finalist of IndieCade, IGF, and SXSW. It was covered by the LA Times, Polygon, and Kotaku, and showcased at GDC, PAX Prime, and E3. Gemini also won the 2014 Boston Festival of Indie Games Awesome Aesthetic Award.


Since 2017, Chen has been working at thatgamecompany, which has designed and developed award-winning titles flOw, Flower, and Journey. Their work has also been inducted into the Smithsonian’s permanent collection.
